The Nissan Skyline is a mid-size car originally produced by the Japanese automaker Prince Motor Company starting in 1957 & later by Nissan after the two companies merged in 1966. It is available in either coupé, or sedan or wagon body styles. The current Skyline is sold in North America, South Korea, Taiwan, & the Middle East as the Infiniti G35.

The Skyline is a Grey import vehicle in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia & New Zealand, amongst others. This will likely end soon (at least with new models) since the GT-R will be launched globally at the end of 2008. It will have the same drivetrain with no detuning, so even privately importing a more powerful model will not be necessary (or even possible).

It comes down to - in a nut shell - saftey & emissions.

The GT-R & even the GTS-T skylines that Motorex imported (see an above answer) all had to be modified to pass emissions for the state of California.
Saftey-wise, they had missing bumper markers, gaurds, etc. that r mandatory of DOT-allowed vehicles.
The car is not ''too fast'' for america, cars that were released here r just as, or faster than the GT-R. The car has a bit of allure & legend behind it thanks to movies like 2Fast2Furious & the like.
Importing one is possible, but it takes tens of thousands of dollars to get it certified & legal for road use.

As for movies & games making the car a legend maybe to younger people but myself had wanted one since the R32 versions came out in 1989 way be for any movies or games.Also the Skyline was a legend way back.

Anyway the Nissan Skyline is now the 350gt & sold in the US as an Infiniti G35.Older Skyline versions like the R32 etc where sold in Japan only although later models where sold in a hand full through Nissan to countries like the Uk although only the GTR model.So all other Skylines r grey imports.
So the Skyline was never really designed to be sold worldwide.A story about the US release of the Skyline was that Nissan released a few 180sx single turbo versions onto the US market these where shunned upon hence Nissan selling the 240sx apparently they believed it was early days for a small turbo engined car to take off in countries where more popular brands where selling well & on non turbo formats.
Importing a Skyline was done through Motorex whom imported a mix of R32 upto R34 versions although they only ever produced crash data for the R33 spec 2 Skylines & since they have been shut down.
So many states allow the Motorex versions to be street legal still.
Others have come into the US in different ways.
What makes the Skyline a well as many other imports is the emissions & as said bumpers etc not meeting US levels,this does not mean there unsafe ,but again they do not meet US regs,although this was said to be the case to be hard to stop many imports flooding the market.

Speed wise the Earlier Skyline versions carried the RB engines these r super tunable & in certain versions can see 1000bhp+Being cheap & easy to tune makes them a fav.

lol they should bring it over here there would be such a big market for it….in my opinion. Yes its in the gray but u can always go the g35’s or g37’s the so called American skyline.

The only skyline sold in America is the new GTR, Also skylines r illegal
due to them lacking D.O.T approved glass & a support beam behind the dash. & also any vehicle imported into the united states newer than 25 years old must conform to Califonia emissions standards

Which means a new exhuast system with three catalytic converters fitted to it must be installed.

also no it is not to fast for the usa. l hate to say it but it is an EXTREMELY overrated car.
