l have a 2008 nissan altima and it comes with cvt, when would be the right time to use cvt, l am wondering if it is ok to use it all the time, or only on the highway, or every now and then...

To the best of my knowledge, the CVT is on all the time and you can not change it.

The transmission is always a CVT. You maybe thinking about the manual mode on your CVT. A CVT transmission has no set gears it will go the right rpm for the amount of demand that is put on the engine. For example if you floor it the rpm is will jump up almost to a redline or if you are cruising they will drop much lower for better gas mileage.

Manual shift mode is that what your talking about? Manual shifter just there to make you think your actually doing something. You may use it as you see fit. However down shifting to slow the car l would use the much cheeper and easier to replace brake pads to slow the car. You can snick down the gear shifter after braking to accelerate out of the turns. Or allow the engine and transmission computers to do the work.
