No! Manual means its a stick shift transmission. Its a 6 speed (forward gears) manually shifted transmission with a clutch. If you can only drive an automatic, this is not the one for you. You can always learn.. We all had to at one time.

It is a stick on the floor of the car, located between the front passenger & the driver. By pressing a pedal next to the brake (the clutch) & moving this stick around, the driver changes or shifts the cars gears so that the car can travel at different speeds. The manual transmission (pronounced: ''manual transmission'') could also be described as a device which most American drivers r not familiar with. Most, not all, Americans do not know how to efficiently operate the device to their advantage (saving fuel, reliability, etc) & most times the device is abandoned for its ''easy going'' (AKA: automatic) counterpart. But all of this will come to an end when the Americans will finally learn that the automatic transmission is the one responsible for invading nations & destroying lives, without the approval of the American public. And that is when they will be re-introduced to the ''manual transmission''. AMEN.

Perhap u should look a car uses a old techology which created by Leyland buses.
Accelerator & brake only but the gear is manual. easily to drive, control & best of all safe. change gear as u like with ur foot step on accelerator or not. Clutch pedal is removed.
Sorry l duno what is the new name term called for this techno of today car. ( l never have a car yet) But some cars have oredi input this techo for ease of driving.
ask around & get recommended this type of car which it is better than just solely automatic car. Aston Martin DB9 & DBS have equiped such techno where u can have choose auto or semi manual.

First of all, if u r going to drive, u better learn a little bit of general & usual terms.
To answer ur question directly, it is a transmission that has 6 gears & that u have to shift manually using the clutch & the shifter.
To explain better:
There r two main types of transmissions: Manual & Automatic.
To make it simple, Manual Transmissions r the ones that u must use the clutch with ur left foot to engage & disengage the engine from the gears. To shit, u must press the clutch, then select a gear with the shifter, & then release the clutch. Originally all vehicles had only this type of transmission.
Later on, the Automatic Transmission was invented. It uses what is called a Torque Converter to replace the clutch. The transmission uses oil pressure to shift between gears using a set of small clutches between each gear. It works different than the manual, but the principle is the same. The Torque Converter uses also oil inside & allows the engine to be all the time “engaged” to the transmission while it shifts gears. You do not have a clutch in this type of transmission. You only shift between Drive, Reverse & Park (and Neutral as well). The transmission shifts automatically.
Now new technology have made possible to alter both types into more sophisticated transmissions. You can have now robotic manual transmissions which were only used on Formula 1 before. Using the same Manual Transmission, a computer controls the clutch (there is no pedal like on the Automatic), & usually the shifting is done sequentially, meaning u shift up & down by hitting the shifter or paddles in the steering wheel. Right now expensive cars have this type, like the Lamborghini Gallardo & the upcoming Nissan GT-R just to mention a few.
Automatic Transmissions have also undergo an extensive upgrade & u can have now the same effect of a sequential shifting & lots of help from computerized hydraulic systems to make the shifting very smooth & almost unnoticeable, or very aggressive if u wish to (like on sports cars).
The number of gears usually depends on the design of the vehicle. Sports cars r getting more gears now, but also some sedans r doing the same. You can have 4, 5, 6, 7 & even 8 gears nowadays. Usually, the more gears, the more power u feel as they (engineers) take advantage of the best RPM on the engine to match it with the best RPM on the gear to generate the most torque at the wheels. Shorter gears means better response when accelerating, but at the price of having to add more gears to reach high top speeds. Simple physics.

of course its not an automatic, by definition manual is something you have to do yourself (ex. shift gears)

ok obviously none of these people that have answered except dan d have done their homework on the new altima coupe.
The altima coupe uses what is called a 6-speed cvt (Continously Variable Transmission). It allows u to drive it like an automatic but l has the option when u slide the gear selector over to the manual mode which will shift gears up & down when u push the stick forward or back. So if you're worried about not being able to drive a manual transmission it does not get any easier than that. u do not even have to worry about a clutch, since it is built right into the transmission.
If u r thinking of getting one, do it, those things r awesome. get the v6 though, 270hp is fun in this car.
