It is been a pretty good running car. For a while now it is been idling really rough. Almost to the point that it wants to stall out. While it idles roughly, it seems to shake a lot too if that means anything. The engine has been good and it is alright after l start to initially accelerate. Though, to accelerate l have to give it a little extra gas to get it moving. What are some possible cause of these problems?

It is a good chance it is ur catalytic converter. Have it checked.

But over & above that it is Japanese..next time buy AMERICAN (the job u save may be ur own).
And for those of u that do not like my answer. l could not care less about u or ur thoughts...yeah l know that there r nissan assembly plants in the U.S. but where do u think the money goes? Back to corporate headquarters. Where is that? JAPAN!

AND l am willing to sacrifice a ''best answer'' to make the point that we would not be in the situation that we r now if more people would see that we do not need to keep sending our money overseas. INCLUDING oil money. DRILL HERE we have the resources right here.

it may be that you have a bad intake gasket.check for air leaks.

l have to agree with the bad intake gasket post above. These engines had an issue with intaked gaskets leaking causing the car to run rough. It will usually set a check engine light as well. They are not an easy fix so you should take it to a Nissan dealer or a shop that has experience with these engines.

It could be just about anything. l would start with a tune up. Changing spark plugs, new air filter.so forth and so on. l would so look at replacing oxygen sensor.

Sounds like a leaky intake manifold gasket. Be careful with flamable sprays. You can locate the #4 cyl intake gasket leak by sparying carburator cleaner around the intake manifold gasket to Cyl head area & watch the engine smooth out. l do not reccomend a back yard mechanic do this job. There r bolts & nuts that r next to impossable to get to & special precautions need to be taken to prevent other hoses & water leaks from happening. The old gasket has to be completely cleaned off.

interesting - my 95 nissan altima is doing the exact same thing, except it actually stalls out - check engine light is on.. It use to only do it in the rain so we thought it was something with that, it has become much more frequent and usually happens when l am slowing to a stop while my foot is on the clutch in 3rd or 4th.. Let me know what you find out, it may help me out.
