l have a 1.3lx l reg micra and its just started kangarooing the garage took it out and it done it then l had a friend look at it and there is a rattling in the engine that shouldnt be there he said it could be timing chain does it cost a lot to repair/replace ?

valve problem or timmig chain jumped cost £150/250 app.check oil pressure as t/chain tensioned by oil pressure.

Hi there, by ur brief description of ur problem, It sounds like ur mass air flow sensor is faulty, this is a common fault in older Micra's. There r 2 possible cures for this, have someone remove the mass air flow sensor & clean the connections & re-solder & joints that r dry joints & re-fit mass air flow sensor. Another cure is a new replacement unit & they cost around £450 & that might be more than the car is worth.
The rattling if it only happens on start up, is nothing to really worry about, the timing chain tensioner is oil pressurised & the oil drains from the tensioner when not idling or running at fast idle engine speeds, so when u start up the engine the oil pump sucks up oil from the engines sump & passes it around the engine the various important componants & maintains a constant pressure which also keeps the timing chain tight. If it is rattling while idling, check ur oil, it may just need topping up, high mileage Micra is can wear the timing chain guides & these as a replacement alone would be more costly than the car is worth.
